WHITE DIRIGIBLE, 1999

CANISTERS, 1999

White Dirigible/Cocoon/Igloo and Canisters (Erect and Fallen) were presented as part of the installation Sitelines and Suitors exhibited at the Kemper Museum in Kansas City in 1999. Their combination was meant to suggest a kind of choreography of courtship, and each of the three structures (of which the white dirigible was the largest) was built with an accessible interior space. While both canister structures were built as transparent membranes, the exterior skin of The White Dirigible/Cocoon/Igloo was almost completely opaque. An opening led to an interior space with a small entryway that split into twin padded chambers. Each chamber featured a small window opening that extended into a long viewing slot which ultimately behaved like an aperture. Looking from the inside out, only a fragmented view of those individuals passing by or looking in could be seen. Those inside the chamber were completely visible to those peering in from the outside.
